The symbol [[➝ symbols]] for that strand in the narratives of the Pentateuch where Elohim is used for the divine name. It is thought to derive in the 8th or 7th cent. BCE. But some modern scholars maintain that the different names for God are no longer a compelling basis for the argument which distinguishes two sources (J and E). Moreover, there has been a marked shift in Pentateuchal studies from dissecting sources towards the literary and theological substance of the final form of the narratives.
